High Definition Television (HDTV) Via Satellite
HDTV is a type of DTV (digital television) service that broadcasts with a significantly higher resolution
than traditional television formats allow. Standard-definition (analog) TV gives up to 480 horizontal lines when
broadcasting, compared to HDTV's resolution of up to 1080 lines, using a 16:9 aspect ratio. High
Definition Television far exceeds the standard resolutions of other formats like NTSC and PAL. NTSC is 720 x 480
non-square pixels, and PAL is 720 x 576 non-square pixels. NTSC uses narrower-than-square pixels, while PAL uses pixels
that are wider than square.
HDTV has at least twice the resolution of Standard-definition television (SDTV) and provides much greater
detail compared to analog television or standard DVD resolution. Also, the technical standards for high definition
broadcasting can handle 16:9 ratio without letterboxing, which increases the effective resolution for the programming.
HDTV via satellite programming has unmatched picture quality and includes Dolby Digital 5.1 surround
sound, similar to the sound found in movie theaters and on DVDs. DirecTV and Dish Network both provide HDTV programming;
Direct TV with 10 HDTV channels, and Dish Network with 25 channels.
